Licensing: The Most Overlooked Section
Most Indian design clients assume they own everything the moment they pay. That's not how IP law works — and it's not how you should price either. License scope affects price:
| License Type | Coverage | Price Multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| Single-use digital | One platform, one campaign | 1x base price |
| Full digital | All digital channels, perpetual | 1.5x |
| Print + digital | All digital + print media | 2x |
| Full commercial | All media + merchandise + sub-licensing | 3x |
| Buyout (source files) | Everything including source files | 3.5–5x |
Source files clause: Never hand over source files (AI, PSD, Figma source) as part of the standard deliverable. Source files = ability to make unlimited edits and remove your credit. Price source file handover separately — typically 50–100% on top of the design fee.
Revision Round Best Practices
Unlimited revisions are the fastest way to kill your profitability. Two rounds covers 95% of legitimate design feedback. Here's how to enforce it professionally:
- Get written feedback. Don't accept "I don't like it" on a call. Send a feedback form or ask them to comment on the shared file. Written feedback is clearer and creates a paper trail.
- Confirm direction before executing. After sharing concepts, ask: "Which direction would you like to proceed with?" Get a written reply before starting revisions.
- Flag scope creep early. If the client asks for something outside the agreed scope during revisions, reply: "That's a new deliverable — happy to quote it separately." Do this politely but immediately.
- Bill the third revision at the start. If a client is heading into a third revision round, raise the invoice before doing the work. It's much harder to get paid for extra work after it's delivered.
What to Include in Your Brand Identity Handoff
- Logo files: AI/SVG (vector), PNG transparent background (multiple sizes), JPG on white background
- Colour palette: HEX, RGB, CMYK, Pantone (if print) for each colour
- Typography: font names, where to download (free/paid), license type (commercial use)
- Pattern/texture files (if applicable)
- Brand guidelines PDF — at minimum: logo rules, colour codes, typography, don'ts
- Editable templates (business card, letterhead) in Canva or PowerPoint for client to reuse
